An intense political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after AIADMK leader C.T. Nirmal Kumar publicly challenged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to produce official documentary evidence, including the original detention order, proving his arrest under the draconian Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) during the 1975-1977 National Emergency.

The challenge directly targets one of the cornerstone political narratives of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's political biography heavily emphasizes his arrest as a young youth wing leader in February 1976 under MISA, during which he was incarcerated in the Chennai Central Prison. DMK literature and party speeches frequently recount the severe physical assaults Stalin allegedly endured in jail, including an incident where senior DMK leader C. Chittibabu reportedly took brutal custodial blows intended for Stalin, which later contributed to Chittibabu's death.

Nirmal Kumar, however, questioned the authenticity of these long-standing historical accounts, asserting that if the Chief Minister truly suffered detention under MISA, his administration should have no hesitation in placing the official state government orders, jail custody logs, and release certificates in the public domain. The opposition leader alleged that the DMK has historically exaggerated the severity and circumstances of Stalin's Emergency-era detention to burnish his political credentials and construct an unchallenged legacy of anti-Emergency sacrifice.

The ongoing friction in Tamil Nadu also coincides with high-voltage political developments in neighboring Kerala, where Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently addressed ongoing legal and investigative actions. Responding to renewed central agency inquiries, Vijayan dismissed recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) charges against him as 'old allegations wrapped in a new script,' pointing toward a broader regional dynamic where political leaders are simultaneously defending historical records and countering central agency probes.

Responding to the AIADMK's demands, DMK leaders and supporters forcefully rejected the opposition challenge, characterizing it as a desperate attempt to distract from developmental issues. DMK representatives emphasized that Stalin's imprisonment during the Emergency is an undisputed chapter of Tamil Nadu's political history, documented in contemporary news reports, parliamentary debates, prison memoirs, and government archives.
