TDP Defends Election Commission, Slams Congress Claims as Politically Motivated

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has strongly defended the Election Commission of India (ECI) against recent allegations leveled by the Congress party, calling them 'politically motivated' and an attempt to undermine democratic institutions. The remarks, made by Andhra Pradesh TDP President Palla Srinivasa Rao, come in the wake of intensifying national debates surrounding the impartiality and functioning of the country's top electoral body.

Addressing the media, the TDP leadership asserted that the Congress party's habit of blaming constitutional bodies like the ECI whenever they face electoral defeats is a dangerous trend. The TDP argued that the ECI has consistently demonstrated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections across various states, regardless of which political party emerges victorious.

The controversy erupted after Congress leaders raised concerns over the functioning of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the overall conduct of the election process in recent assembly polls. Congress had submitted multiple complaints to the ECI, alleging discrepancies and demanding thorough investigations. In response, the ECI rejected these claims, emphasizing the robustness and security of the voting systems.

TDP's defense of the ECI highlights a growing alignment among ruling coalition partners at the Centre. As a key ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the TDP has taken a firm stand against the opposition's narrative. Srinivasa Rao stated that instead of introspecting on their own organizational weaknesses and policy failures, opposition parties find it convenient to target the election watchdog to justify their losses to their supporters.

Furthermore, the TDP president pointed out that the same electoral systems and voting machines have brought the Congress and its allies to power in several states, including Telangana, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh. He questioned why the opposition raises no doubts about the ECI or EVMs when they win elections but immediately questions their credibility when the outcome is unfavorable.

Political analysts view TDP's vocal support for the ECI as an attempt to strengthen its position within the NDA coalition while simultaneously cornering the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh and at the national level.
