Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Battle Intensifies: NDA Secludes MLAs, INDIA Bloc Rallies at CM's Residence

Ranchi, Jharkhand – As the clock ticks down to the hotly contested Rajya Sabha elections on June 18, Jharkhand's political landscape is gripped by intense maneuvering from both the ruling INDIA bloc and the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA). With two crucial Rajya Sabha seats up for grabs, both alliances are employing aggressive strategies to consolidate their legislative strength and prevent any potential cross-voting that could sway the outcome.

The BJP-led NDA has resorted to 'resort politics,' a common tactic in Indian electoral battles, by shifting its 24 Member of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the opulent Radisson Blu hotel in Ranchi. This move, initiated on Tuesday, June 16, is designed to keep its flock united and insulate them from potential defections ahead of the polls. The alliance has reportedly booked 32 rooms until election day, with MLAs scheduled to travel directly from the hotel to the State Assembly to cast their votes. High-profile leaders, including BJP legislature leader Babulal Marandi, have checked into the facility alongside Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, whom the NDA is vocally backing.

NDA leaders stated that the hotel stay is also being utilized for intensive training sessions on the voting process, particularly crucial for first-time MLAs. BJP MLA Roshan Lal Choudhary confirmed he had packed for two days, indicating the extended nature of their stay, while BJP MLA Satyendra Tiwari downplayed any coercion, asserting that the exercise was purely a show of unity and enjoyment. Despite these assurances, the move has drawn sharp criticism from the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which views it as a clear indication of the BJP's lack of trust in its own legislators. Senior JMM leader and Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji sarcastically remarked that the NDA's actions underscored its distrust, contrasting it with Chief Minister Hemant Soren's complete faith in his alliance's MLAs.

Conversely, the ruling INDIA bloc has convened rigorous internal preparations at Chief Minister Hemant Soren's official residence. Chief Minister Soren has personally overseen strategy meetings with alliance legislators, scheduling mandatory mock polling sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. These mock polls are vital for familiarizing MLAs, especially newer ones, with the intricacies of preferential voting rules and eliminating technical errors, thereby ensuring the seamless victory of their nominated candidates. The INDIA bloc has fielded JMM's Baijnath Ram and Congress's Pranav Jha for the two Rajya Sabha seats.

The numerical strength in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly is a critical factor in this tight race. A candidate requires approximately 28 first-preference votes to secure a seat. The INDIA bloc boasts a combined strength of 56 MLAs, comprising 34 from the JMM, 16 from the Congress, four from the RJD, and two from CPI(ML) Liberation. This numerical advantage theoretically provides them with sufficient votes to comfortably secure both seats (28 votes per candidate, totaling 56 votes for two seats).

In contrast, the NDA, with 24 MLAs (21 from the BJP, one each from LJP (Ram Vilas), AJSU Party, and JD(U)), faces a deficit of four votes to secure a win for its backed Independent candidate, Parimal Nathwani. This shortfall necessitates reliance on cross-voting from outside their alliance for Nathwani's victory. Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, a seasoned politician who previously secured Rajya Sabha victories from Jharkhand in 2008 and 2014 with cross-party support, is actively lobbying all 81 lawmakers, appealing to their 'conscience' for their votes. Jharkhand BJP spokesperson Pradeep Sinha expressed confidence in Nathwani's prospects, suggesting that some INDIA bloc MLAs would support him based on his past work. The vacant seats arose due to the passing of JMM co-founder Shibu Soren and the conclusion of BJP member Deepak Prakash's tenure. As June 18 approaches, the political tension in Jharkhand remains high, with both alliances pushing their boundaries to ensure their candidates emerge victorious.
