Priyank Kharge Urges Peace Amid Political Friction Over Festival Guidelines

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has strongly criticized the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, urging political factions not to cook political broth out of cultural and religious festivals. The appeal comes in response to escalating protests by the BJP over the state administration's recently issued guidelines concerning Ganesh Chaturthi processions across various districts of Karnataka.

Speaking to media representatives, Kharge emphasized that festivals in India are meant to foster communal harmony, social bonding, and shared cultural joy, rather than serving as arenas for petty political posturing and electoral polarization. He noted that administrative guidelines are routinely formulated to ensure public safety, manage traffic congestion, and maintain law and order during large gatherings, regardless of which political party holds power in the state.

The controversy erupted after local authorities introduced standard operating procedures and route regulations for installing Ganesha idols and carrying out immersion processions. The opposition BJP vehemently opposed these measures, accusing the ruling government of imposing restrictions on Hindu religious practices and attempting to curtail traditional celebrations. BJP leaders staged demonstrations in several cities, demanding the immediate withdrawal of what they termed as restrictive and discriminatory orders.

Countering these allegations, Kharge defended the administration's stance, asserting that public safety remains paramount during mass celebrations where millions of citizens participate. 'Festivals are a time for celebration and unity, not for political parties to manufacture grievances and exploit public sentiments for electoral mileage,' Kharge stated during his interaction. He appealed to civil society, local organizers, and citizens to cooperate with local law enforcement agencies and adhere to guidelines to ensure peaceful festivities. The minister also reiterated the government's commitment to protecting religious freedoms while upholding constitutional duties related to public order and safety.

Local law enforcement agencies have stepped up security arrangements across sensitive zones in the state to prevent any escalation of tension between rival political workers or religious groups. Authorities have urged citizens to verify information through official channels and avoid falling prey to rumors circulated on social media platforms intended to provoke unrest.
