NTR's Grandson Poised for TDP Entry, Reinforcing Family Legacy in Andhra Politics

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is reportedly preparing for the political induction of another grandson of its legendary founder, N.T. Rama Rao (NTR), a move that highlights the continuing dominance of the Nandamuri-Nara family in Andhra Pradesh politics. This impending entry underscores a deeply entrenched dynastic culture within the party, building upon the established political trajectory of figures like Nara Lokesh, NTR's grandson and the son of current Chief Minister and TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu.

N.T. Rama Rao, an iconic figure in Telugu cinema, founded the TDP on March 29, 1982, with the powerful ideology of 'Telugu Vari Atma Gouravam' (Telugu People's Self-Respect). His charismatic appeal and populist agenda quickly resonated with the masses, leading the party to a historic victory in the 1983 state elections, just nine months after its inception. This triumph marked the first time a non-Congress government was formed in Andhra Pradesh, cementing NTR's legacy as a political disruptor.

The political narrative of Andhra Pradesh has since been significantly shaped by the interconnected Nandamuri and Nara families. NTR's daughter, Bhuvaneswari, is married to N. Chandrababu Naidu, who himself rose through the TDP ranks to become a formidable political leader. Naidu's eventual ascension to the Chief Minister's office in 1995, following a party internal coup against NTR, further solidified the Nara family's stake in the TDP's leadership.

Nara Lokesh, born on January 23, 1983, represents the third generation of this influential political dynasty. Holding an MBA from Stanford University and an MS from Carnegie Mellon University, Lokesh initially worked at the World Bank before formally entering politics. His political journey within the TDP began with his appointment as the party's general secretary in 2014, and he later became a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in 2017. He served as the Cabinet Minister for Information Technology, Panchayati Raj, and Rural Development from 2017 to 2019. More recently, in April 2026, Lokesh was elevated to the position of National Working President of the TDP, signaling his clear position as the heir-apparent and a central figure in the party's future leadership. He currently serves as the Minister for Information Technology, Electronics and Communications, Real Time Governance, and Human Resources Development in the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Lokesh has been credited with successfully managing the TDP's membership drives and undertook a significant 4,000 km 'Yuva Galam' padayatra (foot march) across the state to engage with citizens.

Beyond Nara Lokesh, several other members of NTR's extensive family have played, or continue to play, significant roles in Indian politics, often across different parties. NTR had twelve children, eight sons and four daughters, whose descendants have branched out into both cinema and public service. Nandamuri Balakrishna, a prominent actor and NTR's sixth son, is a sitting MLA from the Hindupur constituency, a seat consistently held by the TDP since its inception. Daggubati Purandeswari, NTR's daughter, has also had a distinguished political career, serving as a Union Minister in the Congress-led UPA government before joining the BJP, where she currently serves as the Andhra Pradesh BJP President and a Lok Sabha MP. Her son, Hitesh Chenchuram, was also reportedly in talks to enter politics with the YSRCP in 2019.

The discussion around other grandsons, such as popular actor Jr. NTR (Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr.), son of Nandamuri Harikrishna, and Taraka Ratna, further illustrates the deep integration of the family into political discourse, with some observers seeing Jr. NTR as a potential future leader. M. Sri Bharath, another son-in-law of Nandamuri Balakrishna, was recently elected to the Lok Sabha from Visakhapatnam, further expanding the family's representation.
