CPI(M) Office Set On Fire in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri

In a volatile escalation of political tension in West Bengal, a local office of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was targeted, vandalized, and set on fire in the Jalpaiguri district. The CPI(M) leadership has pointed fingers directly at the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing associated with right-wing organizations, accusing their activists of initiating the arson attack. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the recurring theme of political violence in the state.

According to local reports, the incident occurred late in the evening when a group of miscreants gathered near the CPI(M) party office. Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the structure shortly after the crowd dispersed. Local residents and party workers rushed to the spot to extinguish the flames before the fire department arrived to bring the situation under control. Despite their efforts, a substantial portion of the office, including important administrative documents, furniture, campaign materials, and archival literature, was completely gutted in the blaze.

Following the incident, local CPI(M) leaders organized a demonstration, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible. The party claimed that the attack was a premeditated attempt by ABVP workers to intimidate opposition cadres and disrupt democratic functioning in the region. 'This is a cowardly attack on our democratic space,' a local CPI(M) representative stated during a protest rally. 'Our party has been actively raising issues concerning working-class citizens and students in Jalpaiguri. Unable to counter us politically, these right-wing elements have resorted to physical violence and arson. We will not be silenced by such intimidation.'

On the other hand, representatives of the ABVP have vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them as politically motivated fabrications designed to malign their organization's image. They asserted that their members had no involvement in the incident and demanded a fair, impartial police investigation to uncover the true perpetrators of the arson. Local BJP leaders also echoed these sentiments, suggesting that internal rifts within the local Left leadership or other political rivals might be behind the incident.

The Jalpaiguri police administration has registered a formal case under various sections of the law, including arson and destruction of public property. Security has been beefed up around political offices in the district to prevent further retaliatory clashes. A senior police official confirmed that forensic teams would examine the site to collect evidence, and CCTV footage from nearby establishments is being analyzed to identify the individuals involved.

Political violence has long plagued the state of West Bengal, with transition periods and local elections often marked by clashes between rival factions. While the state was traditionally a battleground between the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress, the rapid ascent of the BJP in North Bengal has introduced a new dimension to these confrontations.
