Historic Political Shift: IUML Ends Decades-Long DMK Alliance, Joins Ruling TVK

In a momentous shift that redefines Tamil Nadu's political contours, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has officially concluded its long-standing association with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance. The decision, formalized at the IUML State General Council meeting held on Friday, June 20, 2026, in Chennai, culminates a partnership that spanned over six decades. Moving forward, the IUML has declared its allegiance to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, solidifying a new political trajectory within the state.

The formal announcement followed a critical General Council meeting in Royapuram, Chennai, presided over by IUML National President K.M. Kader Mohideen. A significant number of party members, reportedly around 481, participated in the deliberations where 14 resolutions were adopted. The politically significant Resolution 14 explicitly stated the party's inability to continue its journey within the DMK alliance given the prevailing political situation. This decision, as described by Mohideen, is one of the most crucial resolutions passed by the party, signifying a decisive intervention in Tamil Nadu politics.

Citing 'changed political circumstances' in the aftermath of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, the IUML justified its realignment. The election saw C. Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerge as the single largest party, securing 108 seats. However, TVK fell short of the mandatory 118 seats required for an independent majority, creating a hung assembly. This scenario, according to IUML's resolution, raised fears of President's Rule being imposed in the state, which could have indirectly paved the way for the influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

To avert such a constitutional crisis and ensure governmental stability, the IUML resolved to extend its support to the TVK. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had personally reached out to the IUML leadership, and senior TVK functionaries repeatedly sought their backing for government formation. Following extensive consultations with religious leaders, community representatives, and party functionaries, IUML's high-level committee convened on May 9 in Chennai, ultimately deciding to formally support the TVK. The party subsequently submitted its letter of support to the Governor.

A tangible outcome of this new alliance is the inclusion of IUML's Papanasam MLA, A.M. Shahjahan, in the TVK-led cabinet as the Minister for Minorities Welfare. This ministerial berth underscores IUML's active participation in the current administration, a significant development given its long-standing electoral history with the DMK. IUML had contested the 2026 Assembly elections as part of the DMK alliance, winning both the Papanasam and Vaniyambadi constituencies.

National President K.M. Kader Mohideen reflected on the historical bond with the DMK, acknowledging the nearly 60-year-old friendship that began in the era of Annadurai and continued through M.K. Stalin's leadership. He highlighted the party's many electoral victories in local body, assembly, and parliamentary elections achieved under the DMK banner. Mohideen stated that separating from the DMK was not an easy decision, emphasizing the party's dedication to the Dravidian Model of governance and its efforts to see M.K. Stalin as Chief Minister for a second term. However, he indicated that 'God's will turned out to be different,' necessitating a strategic shift.

The IUML's departure constitutes a fresh political setback for the DMK, following closely on the heels of other allies such as the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) formally severing ties. The Indian National Congress, another former DMK ally, was also among the first to extend support to the TVK-led government. This significant weakening of the opposition bloc is expected to have considerable implications for the upcoming by-elections and local body elections in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), meaning 'Victory Party of Tamilakam,' was founded on February 2, 2024, by acclaimed actor C. Joseph Vijay, who now serves as its president and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Headquartered in Panaiyur, Chennai, TVK's ideological principles are rooted in egalitarianism, secularism, and social justice, positioning itself as a centre-left party. The party successfully contested the 2026 Legislative Assembly election, and Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister on May 10, 2026. The TVK-led Alliance, abbreviated as TVK+, was formed in 2026 to achieve the simple-majority requirement for government formation. The party's election symbol is the whistle.

Looking ahead, the IUML has affirmed that decisions regarding future electoral alliances, particularly for by-elections and local body polls, will be made once official notifications are issued and based on the prevailing political climate at that time.
