Shiv Sena at 60: A Party Divided, Factions Face Crucial Crossroads

Mumbai's Shiv Sena, a political party deeply intertwined with Maharashtra's identity, observes its 60th foundation day amidst a tumultuous period marked by a significant vertical split. The party, established by Balasaheb Thackeray in 1966 to champion the rights of the Marathi people, has evolved from a regional movement into a formidable Hindu nationalist force over six decades. However, its diamond jubilee is overshadowed by an intense battle for its legacy and political supremacy between two prominent factions: the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), or UBT, and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led faction is currently confronting what many political observers describe as an 'existential crisis.' This predicament has been exacerbated by recent political setbacks, including the defection of six of its nine Lok Sabha Members of Parliament (MPs) to the Shinde camp. This mass exodus significantly diminishes the UBT's parliamentary presence to just three MPs and weakens its standing within the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, where it aimed to be a primary challenger to the BJP-led Mahayuti.

The challenges for Uddhav Thackeray's faction extend beyond legislative numbers. They are grappling with the critical task of functioning without the original party name and its iconic 'Bow and Arrow' election symbol, which were awarded to the Shinde-led faction by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in February 2023. The ECI's decision was based on the Shinde faction's legislative majority. The UBT leadership is actively working to ensure voters associate the party with its new identity and the 'Flaming Torch' symbol.

Furthermore, the UBT camp faces the delicate balancing act of upholding its traditional Marathi-Hindutva support base while maintaining its alliance with the MVA's center-left parties, including the Indian National Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). There's a persistent rumor, described as 'Operation Tiger,' that the ruling alliance is actively courting more UBT MPs and MLAs with attractive offers to switch allegiance, further intensifying the pressure on Uddhav Thackeray to keep his flock together.

Conversely, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which currently holds the official party name and symbol, is battling for its own relevance, particularly against the dominant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shinde's faction emerged from a major revolt in June 2022, when he led 39 other Shiv Sena members against Uddhav Thackeray's leadership, ultimately toppling the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition government. Shinde objected to the Shiv Sena's alliance with center-left parties and its perceived deviation from its hardline Hindu nationalist stance.

After Uddhav Thackeray's resignation, Eknath Shinde was sworn in as Chief Minister on June 30, 2022, with the BJP's support. The Shinde-led Shiv Sena has since become a crucial component of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. In the 2024 Maharashtra state assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance swept to victory, securing 236 out of 288 seats, with the Shinde-led Shiv Sena contributing 57 seats. The recent defection of six UBT MPs further bolsters Shinde's parliamentary strength, potentially making his faction the largest from Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha. This enhances his bargaining position within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and reduces the ruling coalition's dependence on other key allies.

However, the Shinde faction also faces criticism for being overly dependent on the BJP rather than establishing itself as an independent political force. Political observers suggest that while Shinde's immediate strength is undeniable, his long-term prospects might hinge on his ability to carve out a distinct identity and organizational network, rather than being perceived solely as a BJP appendage. The upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections are viewed as a significant test for both factions, determining who truly holds the upper hand and the future direction of Shiv Sena's legacy.

Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), underscored the party's resilience, stating that it has completed a remarkable 60-year journey despite numerous challenges, betrayals, and political setbacks. He characterized the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena as the 'real Shiv Sena,' drawing parallels to historical struggles and asserting that the party's foundations remain rooted in sacrifice, public service, and ideology. The history of Shiv Sena is replete with internal rebellions and leadership battles, but the current split represents perhaps the most profound existential challenge since its inception.
