Rahul Gandhi Vows INDIA Bloc Unity, Assures Full Support to DMK

At a pivotal meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc in New Delhi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi delivered a resounding message of unity, aiming to quell persistent narratives of internal strife within the opposition coalition. Addressing alliance partners, Gandhi firmly rejected claims of division, stating, 'Get rid of the notion that we are not coordinated and do not act together.' He reiterated the bloc's core commitment to safeguarding democratic values in India.

In a significant declaration, Gandhi specifically vouched for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a key ally from Tamil Nadu, asserting, 'This is not true – I am 100 per cent sure, and I can vouch right now for the DMK.' This strong endorsement came amidst reports of the DMK's absence from the meeting and underlying tensions between the Congress and the DMK over recent political maneuvers in Tamil Nadu, including seat-sharing negotiations and the Congress's decision to support actor Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in the state elections. While some sources indicated that the DMK had opted out of the meeting, the Congress maintained that the alliance's 'Janbandhan' (people's alliance) remained robust.

Gandhi's address, which reportedly lasted about 15 minutes, urged alliance partners to cease 'pulling down each other' and instead focus their collective energy on a 'full-scale resistance' against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He emphasized that the opposition's strength lies in collective action and cautioned against internal rivalries that could weaken the alliance. Drawing a philosophical parallel, Gandhi adopted a 'Shaiva tradition of consuming poison' stance, indicating that the Congress was prepared to 'swallow everything' and accept criticism with a smile, prioritizing the unification of all allies 'with love and affection.'

Concerns about insufficient support from some alliance members on critical issues, such as allegations of voter list manipulation and 'vote chori,' were reportedly raised by Gandhi. He also criticized parties that frequently target the Congress despite remaining part of the INDIA bloc, with media reports suggesting these remarks were directed at parties like the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Left parties. Other leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, reportedly highlighted the absence of key allies like the DMK and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from the meeting and voiced concerns about the Congress's handling of alliance partners.

The meeting, which brought together leaders from approximately 23 opposition parties, aimed to deliberate on a future course of action and present a united front against the Modi government on national issues, particularly in the run-up to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also called for greater coordination, recalling the alliance's united stance against the Centre's Delimitation Bill in April 2026. The INDIA bloc also agreed to approach the Chief Justice of India regarding concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and alleged irregularities in voter lists.

Despite the underlying tensions and acknowledged internal disagreements, the overall message from the meeting was a renewed push for unity. The alliance decided to institutionalize coordination by holding meetings every two months, with the next gathering scheduled for Hyderabad in August. Leaders underscored the importance of protecting democratic values and addressing issues affecting people's livelihoods. Gandhi concluded his address with a guarantee to his partners: if they approach the challenge with belief in unity, 'state after state, election after election, whether they cheat or don't cheat, they will fall.' This statement reflects a defiant optimism against the BJP's dominance, emphasizing that a united opposition can effectively challenge the ruling party, drawing lessons from the 2024 Lok Sabha election results.
