This policy is a welcome relief for thousands of travelers who frequently use the Vande Bharat Express, which has rapidly expanded its network across the country since its inaugural run on February 15, 2019, on the New Delhi–Kanpur–Prayagraj–Varanasi route. The Vande Bharat Express is a symbol of India's indigenous engineering capabilities, designed for speeds up to 160 kmph, though its operational speed is often subject to track readiness.
The introduction of this delay compensation in the form of meals is part of a larger ongoing modernization drive within Indian Railways. The Estimate Committee, during a recent meeting in New Delhi, discussed plans for modernizing the Indian railway system, a discussion in which Raipur MP and committee member Brijmohan Agrawal participated. These modernization efforts extend beyond mere operational efficiency to include a comprehensive upgrade of passenger amenities both on trains and at stations.
Indian Railways has been actively working on enhancing the overall travel experience, which includes upgrading 76 stations with modern amenities for crowd control and passenger convenience. These upgrades feature dedicated passenger holding areas equipped with seating, drinking water, toilets, ticketing facilities, real-time information systems, and enhanced security checks. A pilot project at New Delhi Railway Station has already demonstrated significant improvements in platform decongestion.
